Cleaning Out Your Marketing Closet

Cleaning Out Your Marketing Closet
Donna Duffy
It’s spring–the perfect time of year to clean out your closet. But have you thought that your marketing closet could use a little cleaning up as well? Clutter busting is not just for stuff. It can apply to your marketing too. You know the trendy marketing tools and software that you absolutely had to have because everyone else did. Or the ones you bought that you’ve never logged into except to give your credit card information.

Just like in our clothes closet the clutter in our marketing closets can hinder us from being, doing and looking our best. It’s time to jettison the junk being mindful that one woman’s junk is another woman’s treasure.  Find the ones that are the best for you. Let’s get started.

1. Set the timer. The Pomodoro Technique is a must here or you’ll talk yourself into fitting back into things you wore years ago. Vintage marketing is not in vogue. One of the only things left on the table from yesterday’s marketing is relationship building and we all know that will never go out of style.

2. Have you worn it in the last six months? I know it was a steal and you probably could use it at some point for some promotion or campaign but there it sits just taking up space on your hard drive. You keep trying it on and then taking it off again. Hmm! Keep or throw? OK, here’s an idea! Put it in a folder called Maybe Marketing Tools like you would with the box of clothes you’re going to give to Goodwill. Now let it just sit there. And if you don’t go back to that in at least three months–it’s gone. You have lived and can survive and succeed without it.

3. Does this make me look fat? Translation–does this marketing piece show off your company and you in the very best light? “Give us a twirl as my friend”, Ros, would say. Does it look good from every angle? Not to you but to the people you’re trying to reach? Let’s face it, you wouldn’t try to shimmy yourself into your tightest jeans if you thought you looked fat in them so that’s why you ask! Same rules apply.  Ask and find out from trusted business clients and colleagues, who will be honest with you, to be sure that the marketing messages you’re using are representing you and your company.

4. The must-have, non-negotiables. There are a few things in your closet or dresser that are the must-haves. Let’s take undies for example—bras, underwear and the like that make what you’re wearing on the outside look a whole lot better. There’s no way I’m parting with my underwires and my Lycra; end of conversation.  Now what does that have to do with marketing? Everything!  There are tools so essential, so basic, and so integral, that to forgo using them is almost the same as taking yourself out of the equation.  Think of the reaction to “I’m not wearing any…” –tell me that’s not right up there with, “I’m not using Facebook for business.”  The same shock will register when you’re not using email marketing, article marketing and don’t have a website—all considered to be essential marketing tools or your marketing underwear drawer.  So though you may need to get an upgraded version of some of the basics just remember you can’t do without them.

5. DYLT–I used to have those letters on note card on my fridge when I was dieting. They stand for ‘Donna, you look terrific!’ I knew what they meant and the words were more powerful because they were coming from my mother. Ok, let’s make the connection.

Think of the ideal client that you would love to have multiplied in your company. The kind of person you’d want to do business with all day long because they are such raving fans. Now think of a marketing campaign, promotion, message or tool that you’ve used that had that person saying amazing things to you and about you. Once you’ve made them happy they’ll tell the world so they are the ones you’re crafting your marketing for in the end. In fact, that’s really what should be hanging in your marketing closet.

Here’s why:

1. It fits! Your message, services, mission, vision and clients are in alignment.

2. You can do it all the time with ease and it conveys the most powerful platform for your company. Yes, you may do other things as well for special occasions but these are your best mix and match pieces and they always work together.

3. You look terrific! These marketing pieces reflect you and your company the very best. They are current, connected to your target market and deliver results over and over!

Remember that spring is a perfect time to clean out your marketing closet–but it’s not the only time.  Every few months you should get back in there and clear out what doesn’t work so you can stay clear on what does and maximize transformation in the lives of your clients which maximizes profit for you.  So get the boxes out and decide give, throw, and keep! Then take those keepers and get busy doing what you do best!

My Favorite Things 2011

Raindrops on roses and whiskers and kittens
It’s more like apps  on my iPad and books read on Kindle

Here’s my top 10 favorite things for 2011:

  1. My circle–from the One who watches over me to the ones who run next to me, without a doubt my circle is my number one favorite in my life.  Not sure I’d even  be standing up let alone moving forward and accomplishing things without my circle.  My closest friends and family–their clothes smell like smoke because they’ve walked through the fire with me through times of trial and triumph.  I am beyond grateful for each one of them.
  2. My mentors and coaches–where would I be without those who have pushed me and nudged me.  These wonderful people have helped me move past places I’ve been stuck, scared and overwhelmed.  Any great strides I’ve made are because I’ve had people who have believed in me and told me I could even when I wasn’t sure I could and so I did.
  3. Our team–we have a virtual assistant for admin and bookkeeping, Sherry, and another assistant, Katherine, who is absolutely our girl Friday.  These women make our lives so much easier and so much less stressful.  If its not your strength or gift, if you don’t absolutely love to do a task or know how to do it–best advice–outsource.  Best in-house money spent!
  4. It’s the network–right up there with my circle–it’s the place I’ve been received and respected and has been the catalyst for my learning and teaching.  I’m so grateful to the connections I have.
  5. Professional development–the money we invest in growth may seem outrageous to some but I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I use my trusted RLDT system and it helps advance me in my work and the marketplace every day–Read, Learn, Do, Teach.
  6. My journal–when my kids find these after I’m gone they’ll say, “That explains everything!”  Seriously, this is the place I pray, cry, vent, dream, plan and imagine.  It’s not a ‘Dear Diary, today I went to the store’ of journal neither can it be something ‘I HAVE to write everyday’ kind do journal nor I wouldn’t do it again.  But I’ve been journaling since 1982 so I’ve got a chronicle of my whole adult life.  Love it!
  7. My iPad–0h my goodness, you gotta get yourself one of these.  Hands down best tech tool ever!! My productivity this past year has been off the charts because of this one investment.
  8. Books–the wonder and wisdom found in books from my tattered Bible that feeds my soul to my marketing books that infuse my head with new ideas for us to implement in our businesses.  From paper pages to kindle pages, doesn’t matter I just LOVE books.
  9. Coffee--couple the above with coffee and I’m in my happy place.  I cried when I heard Border’s was closing.  I always said if Borders was giving out degrees I’d have my PhD by now.  Loved that place and absolutely learned a ton from the books I bought at Borders.  Seriously if I had 50 bucks and only had two choices–clothes or books–I’d go for books.  Guess that’s reflected in my wardrobe but if you could see the closet of my mind!!
  10. The beach– there is just something about the sand and the waves that just pulls me in.    I see the ocean and I feel peace.  I’m struck with the majesty and faithfulness of our Creator and I just feel peace.  Like a little kid, I scour the beach for shells and sea glass and drag my treasure home like gifts from the sea just for me.

I could certainly go on and I’m sure many of us share similar things that we just love.  The point is we are blessed beyond measure and given more than we could ever ask or imaging Paul reminds us in Ephesians.  We have gifts, in us and around us.  Everyday gifts that bless us and encourage us and make our lives richer, even in the toughest of times.

I’d like to give you a gift called Open Everyday Gifts–it’s 30 Days to Discovery and Gratitude.  You’ll receive an email everyday for 30 days with a gift that is in you or around you.  It will remind you of just how very rich and blessed you are and hopefully it will cheer and encourage your heart as you live and serve those around you each day.

At the time of year when we put so much emphasis on gift giving, I hope you’ll enjoy the wonderful blessings and gifts that in you and right there around you right this very minute.  No need for gift wrap, no need for hustle and bustle–just time to rest on the fact that all is calm and all is bright.

May you and your family enjoy the beauty of the season and the treasures you share in each other and those you’ve received from above.

Wishing you a New Year that is beyond what you ever could have imagined!

I can see clearly now

Do you ever find yourself in a fog?  You kind of know the direction you want to head but lack clarity and certainty for your final destination?

In business, it is essential that we get clear on not only where we want to go but how we want to get there.  So many things are calling for our attention and money.  There are so many roads we could take; tasks we could put our hand to–but which are best; which will trump the good with the great?

Taking time to focus on destination and direction is time well spent.  It means that we determine what we will bring to the marketplace. Our distinct and definite purpose can then serve best because we have aligned the needs of others with our ability to bring service and value to those who have come to know, like and trust us.

When we’re sure of where we’re headed and how we want to get there, we can see the obstacles and hurdles that could possibly inhibit our growth and hinder our path to achieving our dreams and goals.  We can steer clear of them or push through them knowing that their presence merely solidifies within us the determination to get there!

I can see clearly now—can you?

The Big Push–Counting Down the Days to the End of the Year

As we wrap up another year, I’m compelled to look at several areas that I want to be sure I have battened down before the clock strikes twelve on midnight.

Where am I with my marketing projects and promotions?  What have I started that I can finish by 12/31?  What promos and offers can I get out there over the holiday season?

What about people?  Who do I want to connect with before the new year?  Who have I neglected to enter into my database?  Who have I been hoping to JV with this past year?  I still have time to make it happen!

Of course there are always problems that creep up through the weeks and months.  What do I want to be sure to resolve before I head into another year?  Are there situations that will continue to be problems in 2010 if I just leave them unattended?  It’s time for resolution!

And what about my potential?  It’s too easy for me to let things go because its the holidays.  What did I want to tap within my self this year that kept getting put on the shelf?  Can I make a big push and get it done the new year begins?

And lastly, what are my plans and projections?   Am I starting the year with the end of 2010 in mind?  What are my next 90 day plans from January to March?  What do I want to accomplish by mid-year and how do I want the year to end?

Taking time to ask ourselves these crucial questions will help us with direction in the everyday and vision for the future.

The end of 2009 is just a couple of weeks away.  How will I wrap up the year?  How will you?  Let’s make the BIG PUSH and finish well.
